Begny Lake is a large lake situated in the Dromara area, and is well known for containing large stocks of big Pike, with records of up to the 30lb mark! The Pike's diet consists mainly of Perch. Begny is a man made lake that is very deep and has a rocky bed, so many spinners have been lost! As the lake is so big, often a whole day's fishing is required to do it justice, and it is the early bird or the night owl that catches the biggest fish.
Begny is surrounded by trees in some areas and open in others. Reeds are also found in places and this is a prime spot for jack pike.
Tactics!
The best way to catch the large female pike is to use a large beach caster. This is a large fishing rod that is mainly used for sea fishing and ranges from about 12 foot to 15 foot in height. These rods can achieve massive casting distances and if you posses a multiplier reel (which also can enable you to cast large distances), then you can cast to places that most people have no access to. Once again mackerel is the best bait to be used, but herring is another smelly bait that can attract the pike. To catch the perch, you should use a pencil float with maggots near reed beds, as this is where they are likely to be.
