Broadwater Canal.

Broadwater is a disused canal that is situated about ten miles from Lisburn town centre. It is known for both its fishing and its wildlife, namely birds. The best feature at the Broadwater is its fine stock of coarse fish.

The species of fish that can be caught in the canal are Pike, Perch, Roach and few Rudd. The Pike that can be caught can be extremely large. Pike of up to thirty pounds have been recorded, but the majority that are caught are large jack-pike that grow no larger than about five pounds. The Perch, as with any, can range from as little as a few ounces to as much as two pounds. The amount of perch that can be caught in Broadwater is very great, as this is the main food source of the jack pike, which are low in numbers due to the pike feeding on the jacks. Rudd and Roach are found in smaller numbers as these are both the smallest and weakest fish that can be caught in the canal.

The methods of fishing in Broadwater are multiple. You can choose to fish 'on the bottom', using a float, dead-baiting/live-baiting, or spinning. For larger pike, you are guaranteed to catch if you use live bait (although don't let a bailiff catch you! (its illegal!)). When live baiting, use perch, as this is the only 'frisky' fish in the water. When dead-baiting, any fish can be used, including sea fish that can be purchased at a local fish-mongers. Mackerel are the best bait as they have the same markings as a young pike which are the main diet of large pike. Spinning with a spinner, also known as a plug is another proven fish catcher. It consists of casting a small metal or plastic fake fish which imitates a fish's movement when reeled in.
