John Ballance was influenced by the religious beliefs of his
parents. His father was a member of the Church of Ireland, his mother was
a Quaker.

Quakerism started in the mid 1600's. Quakers belong to the Society of Friends. They were created by the English Puritan, George Fox. Quaker groups are small and are found all over the world. They are humanitarian, they reject wars and push for peace. Quakers are Pacifists. Quakerism emphasises the immediate application of Christ's teachings to everyday life. It rejects the need for formalized services, creeds or clergy. Friends' meetings wait in silence for the 'inward light'.
Perhaps it was Quaker influences which made John Ballance reject sectarianism and help people of all belief, race, sex and age.
